August 16, 2022: It was a festive weekend with Freeride Sudamerica for the second 2023 Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) stop at La Parva this weekend!
With a spectacular competition in La Parva on Saturday, August 13, Freeride Sudamerica concluded the second stop of the South American FWQ tour. Athletes will travel on to Argentina where South American Champions will be crowned following two more FWQ competitions.
International athletes from all over the globe participated in South America’s highest octane event yet. The athletes brought an intensity and level of talent never before seen in the South American FWQ circuit to the “La Pared” venue at La Parva. The stakes this season have been raised, as the top ranking regional athletes will be awarded access to the 2023 FWQ Final Series taking place in Canada and the USA in March and April 2023. The La Parva FWQ 2* concluded the final stop in Chile before the tour continues on in Argentina in September at Cerro Bayo and Cerro Catedral.
Fifty-one athletes tackled La Pared at high speed, executing big airs and tricks as they vied for a coveted podium spot. The spectators enjoyed quite a show as did skiers and snowboarders riding the the Águila chairlift adjacent to the competition venue.
La Parva proved to be an excellent mountain host and were pleased to welcome the FWQ athlete community after hosting a Junior 2* Regional in July. “We are happy to be part of this great initiative, we deeply believe in this project and we want Chilean and South American sports to be competitive with the rest of the world. I believe that by supporting Freeride Sudamerica, we are doing our bit,” says La Parva’s Mountain Manager, Camila Margozzini.
Just as he impressed in the El Colorado FWQ 2* last week, French athlete Gabriel Bletton claimed the 1st place podium for ski men. Bletton has recently qualified for the Freeride World Tour (FWT) in the Snowboard division, but he is dominating the Freeride Sudamerica circuit on skis. "I am very grateful to the entire Freeride family in Chile, the events are incredible and the community is very welcoming," gushes Bletton. The Frenchman traveled to South America with friends to train for the upcoming FWT tour. A Chilean or Argentine rider will need to win both events in Argentina in order to earn a slot at the FWQ Finals.
Competition was fierce over in the women’s ski division. Claudia "Peque" Aliaga (CHI) had previously won the El Colorado FWQ 2* followed by Saga Goñi (CHI) in second place. This weekend at La Parva, the result was reversed leaving these two skiers tied heading into the second half of the tour. Results from Cerro Bayo and Cerro Catedral will determine which athlete qualifies for the FWQ Finals. Freestyle Olympian Dominique Ohaco is new to the Freeride scene but performing admirably by earning third place at both FWQ events. Argentina’s Danisa Guardatti earned 4th place in her first competition of the year.
Over in the women’s snowboard division Isidora Assler (CHI) is showing great strength and dominance. She followed up her El Colorado win with another at La Parva this weekend. She needs only to secure one more podium in Argentina to ensure a 2023 FWQ Finals invitation.
Things are tighter between athletes in the men's snowboarding division.Tadeo Leslie (ARG), Tomás Castelli (ARG) and Diego Cerón (CHI) have been shuffling podium wins at El Colorado and La Parva. Results in next month’s Argentina events will determine who will test their mettle in the FWQ Finals. Stay tuned!

“With the conclusion of the La Parva FWQ 2*, we have just completed the first half of our incredible South American Tour. Everything went very well at both El Colorado and La Parva and we want to thank these ski centers for the support they have given us. It means so much to the local riders to have the opportunity to compete at home. Now it is time to continue on to Argentina and watch which South American athletes qualify for the FWQ Finals Tour, it’s very exciting!”
All the events in Chile were attended by IFSA representatives, Brennan Metzler and Taylor Merritt. Metzler and Merritt are working directly alongside Freeride Sudamerica managers Gonzalo Lopatin (Arg) and Fernando Ochagavía (Chi) to better unite Region 2 and ensure consistency amongst competition rules, judging, etc.
“What we have seen here in Chile is spectacular, South America has great potential in terms of athlete growth and event organization. The passion for Freeride, the great community and the warm welcome is what we are most excited about,” commented IFSA Executive Director, Taylor Merritt.
The La Parva FWQ 2* Judge panel consisted of Sebastían “Tuto” Oyarzun (CHI) and Eduardo “Oso” Herreros (CHI) collaborating with Kyle Taylor (USA), a US Head Judge and former FWT competitor. Brennan Metzler worked alongside the team to supervise the scores and comply with our rigorous international standards. Metzler is an IFSA Board Member, a certified IFSA judge, a certified IFSA coach and also serves as technical director for a number of events in Colorado.

La Parva se vistió de fiesta durante el fin de semana con un increíble evento de la mano de Freeride Sudamerica
Con una espectacular competencia en La Parva se terminó la primera mitad del Circuito Sudamericano de Freeride, ahora todo sigue en Argentina.
Atletas de todo el mundo participaron en lo que fue un evento de altísimo nivel y que se vivió con una gran intensidad durante el pasado sábado 13 en el sector “La Pared” del centro de ski La Parva, ubicado a tan solo una hora de Santiago.
Se trató de la segunda fecha del Circuito Sudamericano de Freeride que es parte del Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) y que, por primera vez en la historia, dará plazas a los mejores atletas regionales a las finales clasificatorias al mundial de la disciplina, el Freeride World Tour (FWT). Con este evento finalizó la etapa que se desarrolla en Chile para continuar en el mes de septiembre en Cerro Bayo y Cerro Catedral de Argentina.
Fueron 51 esquiadores que bajaron a toda velocidad realizando grandes saltos y trucos arriesgando su integridad para conseguir un lugar en el podio y dando un show increíble a los espectadores presentes, incluso, algunos tuvieron la suerte de pasar por la aerosilla Águila y ver las mejores bajadas desde el aire.
“Estamos felices de ser parte de esta gran iniciativa, creemos profundamente en este proyecto y queremos que el deporte chileno y sudamericano sea competitivo con el resto del mundo y creo que apoyando a Freeride Sudamérica estamos aportando nuestro granito de arena”, dijo la gerenta de montaña de La Parva, Camila Margozzini.
La gran nota del día la dio nuevamente el increíble atleta francés Gabriel Bretton, quien a pesar de haber clasificado al Freeride World Tour en Snowboard, compitió en esquíes ganando, al igual que la semana pasada en El Colorado, el primer puesto de la categoría ski hombres. “Estoy muy agradecido a toda la familia del freeride en Chile, los eventos son increíbles y la comunidad muy acogedora”, dijo el deportista galo que vino a nuestro continente con amigos a entrenar y seguir en contacto con la nieve. En dicha categoría aún no hay un candidato a ganarse la clasificación a las finales ya que ningún esquiador sudamericano pudo repetir podio.
La categoría ski femenino es la más peleada de todas, ya que en El Colorado ganó Claudia “Peque” Aliaga (Chi), seguida de Saga Goñi (Chi) y en La Parva el resultado fue invertido, dejando a las dos con la misma cantidad de puntos de cara a las dos competencias finales en Argentina que definirá quien de las dos se llevará la clasificación a las finales en Estados Unidos y Canadá. La atleta olímpica de freestyle, Dominique Ohaco, está incursionando en el Freeride y no les pierde pisada con dos terceros puestos seguidos, mientras que la Argentina Danisa Guardatti obtuvo el 4to lugar en su primera competencia del año.
En Snowboard Mujeres la chilena Isidora Assler está dominando el circuito con dos triunfos consecutivos y solo le resta tener un podio más en Argentina para asegurarse la invitación a los eventos definitorios.
En snowboard hombres la cosa está muy peleada entre los argentinos Tadeo Leslie, Tomás Castelli y el chileno Diego Cerón ya que han compartido el podio en ambos eventos. Veremos que les depara en Argentina.
“Terminamos aquí, en Chile, la primera parte de este increíble tour sudamericano, todo salió muy bien tanto en El Colorado como en La Parva, queremos darles un gran agradecimiento a estos centros de ski por el apoyo que nos han dado y por la oportunidad de correr en su casa. Ahora es momento de seguir en Argentina y ver quiénes son los primeros campeones sudamericanos en clasificar a las finales FWQ”, dijo el director de la International Freeskiers Association (IFSA) y manager por Chile de Freeride Sudamérica, Fernando Ochagavía.
Todos los eventos en Chile contaron con la presencia de los directores de la IFSA Brennan Metzler y Taylor Merrrit, los cuales están trabajando junto a sus compañeros y directores de Freeride Sudamérica, Gonzalo Lopatin (Arg) y Fernando Ochagavía (Chi) para unir la disciplina en una gran región y tener las mismas reglas, estilo de jueceo y demás detalles. “Lo que hemos visto aquí en Chile es espectacular, Sudamérica tiene un gran potencial tanto en terreno, atletas y organización. La pasión por el freeride, la gran comunidad y la manera de relacionarse es lo que más nos ha marcado”, comentó la directora ejecutiva Taylor Merrit.
Los jueces fueron los chilenos Sebastían “Tuto” Oyarzun y Eduardo “Oso” Herreros junto al Head Judge estado unidense y ex competidor del Freeride World Tour Kyle Taylor. A su vez el experimentado juez, entrenador y director de carrera Brennan Metzler trabajó a la par de ellos para supervisar los puntajes y cumplir con los rigurosos estándares internacionales.
